CCTV stands for closed-circuit television, usually known as video surveillance. The term "closed circuit" means that it is broadcast to a limited (closed) number of monitors, as divergent to "normal" television, which is broadcast to the general public. Security cameras are useful for recording images and videos in private homes, restaurants, banks, commercial premises and even on the street. Cameras work by monitoring, recording video images and transmitting them to a monitor. Thus CCTV is mainly used for security purposes. CCTV cameras use advanced recording technologies and processes that enable companies to reduce costs and protect their assets. Installing a CCTV system brings a number of benefits to businesses.
While manufacturers may promote their IP solutions as the most efficient choice for new CCTV installations, there are still many traditional analogue (standard definition/SD) systems as well as an increasing number of high-definition (HD) analogue systems terms. The main difference between the two systems is the way in which images are transferred between the cameras and the recording system. IP cameras allow images (binary data) to be transmitted over a network and each camera has its own IP address to communicate with the recorder. Analog SD/HD (or analog) cameras, on the other hand, send images as composite video signals directly over coaxial cable to a digital video recorder (DVR), where they are converted from analog to digital and then compressed for more efficient storage. In IP systems, the A/D conversion and compression is done in-camera, reducing the bandwidth required to transmit video over the network, often to a network video recorder, but other storage solutions such as server/cloud computing it is becoming more general. As image resolution and network/internet speeds improve, IP cameras are becoming more common. Analog systems are often less expensive and have less bandwidth limitations, but they do not offer the video analytics, scalability, and wired/wireless flexibility that IP cameras do. IP cameras are also ideal for technician who wants to take advantage of cloud-based surveillance storage options that stream video images directly to an external server. Advantages of a cloud-based solution include off-site storage, easy access for authorized personnel, and a VSaaS (video as a service) alternative for video storage.
Today is the High resolution (2 MP) is the minimum expectation, with many manufacturers offering, Full high definition (FHD), 2K (4MP), ultra-high resolution 4K (8 MP) as standard in their fixed cameras, both in analog and high-definition IP cameras. 8K (33 MP) variants are also starting to appear on the market, offering operators an "ultra-high resolution" option. These cameras are considered predominantly suitable for use to monitor in high-security environments, such as stadiums, transportation hubs, and other outdoor locations at risk of terrorist activity. These options are best suited for situations where video evidence needs to be recorded, especially when a high level of zoom is required without image pixilation, but such devices tend to be expensive.
